Whispering from the Woods: Artists Statement: Kim Bellavia

Forests are truly enchanted and trees are inhibited with mysterious spirits or energy that speaks to us as we silently pass.

My work emerges from a conversation, a poetic exchange that happens while I listen to the language of stillness that emanates from the human aura of the trees and the soul of nature itself. Through this dialogue I create interpretations, depicting how nature and human nature weave themselves into the intrigue of life and the entropy of existence. Creating art to experience a sacred relationship with the natural world is a core theme in my work.

My passion of being in nature in touch with natural materials leads me to using the pieces I find lying on the ground during my pilgrimages. The natural materials that compose my work are the instruments for breaking the boundaries between external world and internal self, revealing a myriad of worlds. I see these constructive connections as fragments of time in a life.

You have become stronger and more beautiful, full of life giving qualities. You have learned to take all the negativity around you and turn it into oxygen for easy breathing. A host of wild creatures live inside you and you call them stories. A variety of beautiful birds rest inside your mind and you call them memories. You have become an incredible self sustaining thing of epic proportions. And you should be so proud of yourself, of how far you have come from the seeds of who you used to be.”
