  • Feather of Hope at Cumming Nature Center

    September 4 & 5 | 1:00pm - 4:00pm

Join us for a community art project and create a Feather of Hope to add to a woodland sculpture! Based on Emily Dickinson's poem "Hope is the thing with feathers," local Finger Lakes artist Kim Bellavia is creating a figurative sculpture located on the Helen Gordon Trail at Cumming Nature Center. This figure will be sitting in a nest made out of organic, natural materials such as grapevine, willow branches, and sticks. Through her work, Bellavia will use the imagery of nesting and owls to explore the themes of transformation, hope, and home that have emerged during the pandemic.

On Saturday, September 4 and Sunday, September 5, the public is invited to come and paint a wooden feather with something that gives them hope. Participants will then hang their feather of Hope on the nest, slowly adding to the installation over the weekend. This sculpture will remain on the Helen Gordon Trail through October 31, 2021.

    Community workshop dates: September 4 & 5
    Time: 1:00pm - 4:00pm (this event is come-and-go)

This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by Auburn Public Theater’s Finger Lakes Community Arts Grants Program.

You have become stronger and more beautiful, full of life giving qualities. You have learned to take all the negativity around you and turn it into oxygen for easy breathing. Our hands tell who we are.
They are believed to be perfect subjects of the mind.
As physical labor shows in the callouses on our palms,
so does gentleness or greediness or strength.
Nothing else expresses human behavior in so many ways.
With our hands, we work, play, love, threaten, show joy or grief.
Sensitive symbols of faith and friendship, our hands draw to us
    everything and everyone we love.

Marvelously made and directed by the mind's eye,
the mind's ear, and the heart's desire,
our hands continually express our lives.
An abusive hand is from an abusive mind.
But the gentle touch does exist - even for those
who have yet to experience it. What words cannot say,
the hands can express with all tenderness and love.

  • Looking for the Green Man

Kim Bellavia | Grant - THE GREEN MAN

    THE GREEN MAN
The Green Man is a mythical concept of the spirit of the forest, frequently depicted as a Man’s face, usually from middle aged to elderly, appearing out of the wild forest. His face is always encompassed by leaves, vines or flowers seeming to be literally born out of the natural world. He is a representation of the wildness in nature and a symbol of growth, rebirth and the cycles of the seasons and life.

This work humanizes the mythical concept of the Green Man as consort to mother earth as a reminder of the importance of the natural environment on this planet creating a link to art and nature and the appreciation of the natural world.

    Free Workshops:
Learn about the history and folk lore of the Green Man and create your own Green Man to be on display at my opening Exhibit. Two consecutive workshops: August 16th, 1:00 - 3:00 pm, and August 23, 1:00 to 3:00 pm.
